A New Era
A baseball
field is more than just a place, it's an experience. Since early last century
the ballpark has been where Detroit has gone to let the pulsations of the
day fade out amid the rhythms of the game. Today the city reaches a crossroads,
as Progress blazes a trail straight to the new Comerica Park, and the Tigers
play their first home opener away from The Corner this afternoon against
Seattle. Leading off: history.

Last
season - Jeff George waits impatiently behind a well-established Minnesota
starting QB for the chance to wear his helmet, before piloting the team
to the playoffs.. This season - George will wait behind a well-established
former Minnesota starter, after signing a contract with the Redskins to
back up Brad Johnson ... The Red Wings wait to open Wednesday against the
Kings, bummed about having to play the only serious first round threat
despite having the league's 2nd best record. They will, however, be the
most tested team in the second round.

Christian
A. Bileth's rant against Vince McMahon got us thinking about pro wrestling.
What do we make of it - competition or circus? We decided to talk it over,
with two writers each taking different sides for today's Inside Slant.
Matt Duwe defends wrestling as a form of sports entertainment as legit
as any other, while Nathan Bierma says the important criteria exclude it
as a sport. Both will be back next week to see if they've changed anyone's
minds, but in the meantime you can have your own take at our Fan Forum.

Duwe: Pro wrestlers belong before ballroom dancers

The Coin Toss
By Kelly Feasel
On
Monday Ken Griffey, Jr., at 30 years 141 days of age, became the youngest
player ever to hit 400 home runs, beating out the great Jimmy Foxx by 107
days. The blast came on his father’s 50th birthday in a losing effort against
the Colorado Rockies. In recent days, during his early season slump, Cincinnati
fans have booed Griffey. Griffey, who wears his father’s number 30, has
now recanted on his statement that numbers don’t mean anything, it’s the
player in the uniform; he now has declared he wants his number 24 back.
Unfortunately for Griffey that number, worn by newly elected Hall of Famer
Tony Perez during his days with the Big Red Machine, is slated for retirement.
Hey Junior, you’re home. You’re arrival signifies the eventual end for
Jack McKeon and your father’s eventual appointment as Manager of the Reds.
You could own this city like nobody since Pete Rose. Stop worrying about
numbers on the back of your uniform, the boos, who's managing the team,
and play ball.

I find it funny that
so many people complain of the new stadiums. It is my experience that some
of the old stadiums, though nostalgic, are terrible in terms of efficiency.
Long lines at concessions and bathrooms, dirty facilities, and long waits.
The new stadiums allow me to enjoy the game a little more comfortably,
not wait in lines as long, and use facilities that are clean. I for one
do appreciate the efficiency of a new stadium, but mostly I like the fact
that many of the new stadiums are fan friendly.

by 1) taking time for analysis and 2) bringing the fans into the conversation.

we offer e-mails, message boards, chat rooms, and local polls. We
keep you informed, but realize that information without perspective is
hollow. And so we look to inject the same personality into our Web site
